-The Notorious BIG, “Juicy”
Is it really necessary to review this album? It’s just a compilation of The Notorious B.I.G’s hits with a couple of unreleased tracks. Forget that, the better question is: why not review this shit? This album is a reminder of what made Biggie one of the greatest in the hip-hop game.
Ten years ago (March 9, 1997), Biggies Smalls was taken away from us unexpectedly. He left behind a legacy with albums like Ready To Die (1994) Life After Death (1997) and the posthumous Born Again (1999). Despite such a short career, Biggie left behind tracks that can be argued as pure classics. This album brings it all together and should be in the collection of hip hop heads everywhere.
The album starts off with a classic joint, “Juicy”: the story of Biggie’s life struggles to his eventual rise to the top. It’s the ultimate triumph over adversity song, an anthem for everyone who came from meager beginnings. The heat continues with other classic songs like “Big Poppa,” “Hypnotize,” “One More Chance,” and Junior Mafia’s “Get Money.” It also includes his most recent posthumous hit, “Nasty Girl.”
The disc also includes two unreleased tracks. "Running Your Mouth," a song with a grimy beat and hard lyrics, features hip-hop heavyweights Fabolous, west coast don Snoop Dogg, Busta Ryhmes and Nate Dogg. "Want That Old Thing Back," is more mellow but still has that classic Biggie delivery, raw and on point.
This collection of songs is the true definition of a greatest hits album from one of the greatest rappers. Listen to it over and over and get nostalgic, reminiscing over the lyrics and hooks that made him the King of New York and hip hop.
