Power Struggle--led by Bay Area-based, Midwest-bred emcee Nomi and his latest cast of beat technicians (LA's Fatgums and SF's Mister Rey)--dropped their latest LP, Remittances, earlier this month. It's a powerful record that takes listeners on a journey, told from the perspective of a working-class immigrant disillusioned by the American dream. A nomad himself, Nomi's roots stretch to Minneapolis and Brooklyn, where he set up shop with former crews Oddjobs and Kill the Vultures. He toured the world and had a fleeting affair with the rap life before hanging it all up to serve a greater purpose.
"I was empty hustling in New York," he said in a 2008 interview with Hyphen magazine. "At the end of the day, being more active in my community and fighting for social justice is more fulfilling than getting your ego stroked." Now a moving force in San Francisco's Filipino American community, Nomi works as a community organizer and teacher at the Filipino Community Center.
It's truly an honor for Oh Dang! to celebrate the release of Remittances on June 4 at Pier 23 Cafe in SF. Featuring performances by Power Struggle (Nomi with Kiwi, Bwan, Pele, Mister Rey, and Saico), Denizen Kane, Dirty Boots, Otayo Dubb and the Counterparts with DJ Wonway on the tables.
