First off, sorry for our lack of updates these past couple weeks. We focused on a couple promo events, which are always more about having fun than raising funds. Which is why we're still broke. Thanks to everyone who rolled through to our Big Bang 2 party with B2S1 last Friday, especially the DJs, artists, b-boys who started an impromptu circle and the crowd of cats ciphering outside who didn't want the night to end. Thanks y'all!
And now, a couple free mp3s for our peoples...
Download: Okwerdz ft. Mistah Fab, Lush One and Casual - Handicap
Cali emcee Okwerdz dropped his new single "Handicap," featuring Mistah Fab. Lush One and Casual. We talked about Okwerdz briefly when his Rush Hour EP dropped. Ok's the homey and a talented artist, but I'm not really feeling this joint. When I first heard this like a year and a half ago after they recorded it, I was excited. Mistah Fab was all over Bay Area radio at the time and even had his own radio show, so maybe Okwerdz and Casual would finally get some radio spins. Everyone was on the hyphy train, so why couldn't Okwerdz and Casual bubble off it as well?
From a marketing standpoint, it was a great idea: mixing hyphy with some notable indie artists, allowing Okwerdz and Lush One to get some shine and even upping the hyphy contingent on Bay legend Casual. Had it only dropped before the hyphy movement sorta fizzled out. Not sure why its release was delayed but now that the hyphy hype has come and gone, "Handicap" comes off as a little too late. The beat's kinda hot and the hook's catchy but, conceptually, it's not very creative; it's your standard "ghostride the whip" and "go dumb" hyphy anthem that we've heard too many times. But, who knows, maybe it'll reinvigorate the scene? I'm sure hyphy proponents will slap this regardless. Download, listen and let us know what you think. Next...
Download: Atmosphere - Shoulda Known
I've blogged about Atmosphere before as well, after they dropped the free online album Strictly Leakage. This is the first single off next month's When Life Gives You Lemons, You Paint That Shit Gold. I'm only posting this because some of y'all might dig it. The bassline's got the neck nodding and toes tapping, but Slug's delivery doesn't grab me enough to care what he's rapping about, probably addiction and women, which ain't really breaking new ground. I am looking forward to When Life Gives You Lemons... and Sad Clown Bad Spring 12 on the strength of the seasonal Sad Clown series, which has been pretty solid througout. Peace.
